The island of Tchegera is a little corner of paradise in the Congo. Situated on the beautiful turquoise waters of Lake Kivu, Tchegera Island is known for its distinct crescent shape, which is actually the top crater rim of a long-extinct volcano. On clear nights, the island offers spectacular views of Nyiragongo and Nyamuragira as their glowing red lava pierce a star-covered sky. The two highest Virunga volcanoes, Mikeno and Karisimbi, can also be seen from Tchegera as well as sweeping landscapes of Lake Kivu and its surroundings. The views of Nyiragongo and other volcanoes are breathtaking!
