Located in the East Africa region, Rwanda boasts two remarkable primate parks: Volcanoes National Park and Nyungwe National Park. These parks offer incredible opportunities to experience primate trekking amidst the lush and diverse landscapes of Rwanda.
Volcanoes National Park
Volcanoes National Park is renowned for its gorilla trekking and golden monkey trekking experiences. Both activities provide an immersive and informative guided adventure through the forest trails. Here’s what you can expect:
- Gorilla Trekking: This adventure takes you deep into the forest to encounter mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. The trek usually lasts between 2 to 6 hours, depending on the location of the gorillas. The experience is physically demanding but incredibly rewarding.
- Golden Monkey Trekking: Compared to gorilla trekking, this is a less strenuous but equally fascinating experience. You’ll spend around 2 to 6 hours walking through the forest to observe the lively and endangered golden monkeys.
Both treks start at 7:30 am with a briefing at the park headquarters in Kinigi. Please note that there are no afternoon treks offered for these activities.
Nyungwe National Park
Nyungwe National Park is another primate haven, offering unique trekking experiences to see chimpanzees and colobus monkeys.
- Chimpanzee Trekking: This trek often starts early in the morning, sometimes as early as 4:30 am. You’ll be driven to a common meeting point for a general briefing before beginning your trek. The early start is crucial to maximize your chances of encountering the chimpanzees as they are most active in the morning.
- Colobus Monkey Trekking: This activity is more flexible and can be done at any time of the day. It offers a chance to see large groups of these fascinating primates in their natural environment.
