Lake Kivu

Lake Kivu

Situated on the border of Rwanda and DR Congo, Lake Kivu has become one of Rwanda, top leading tourism destinations, with a number of leisure lodges coming up at the shores of the lake, to support leisure adventure for the sun and sand lovers.

Lake Kivu, is Rwanda’s biggest fresh water lake, with no crocs or hippos. The lake has boosted water sport adventure, such as boat rides, to the islands, canoe rides, kayaking, paddle boating. The Kivu belt offers breath-taking scenery, exquisite weather, and many activities. Those interested in hiking, can take on the 227 km Congo Nile trail, which rewards you with a great hiking experience across the Kivu belt, where you have a chance of exploring the tea plantations and meeting the local community. The Congo Nile trail can as well be explored through biking.

A number of floating water boats with accommodation have newly emerged. Mantis Queen Uburanga, is a newly introduced house boat in addition to Iliza House Boat, which has been in operation over the years. The Iliza house boat, has 4 Cabins, and can take up to 8 people. The fully inclusive Iliza houseboat allows you ample time to enjoy a night on Lake Kivu, as you cruise from Gisenyi to Kibuye. Early booking is advised, meals and breakfast is served on board. The boat allows you a 3600 view of Lake Kivu. The boat decks at night and sails across Lake Kivu during the daytime.

With the newly introduced Mantis Queen Uburanga, which is a more luxury floating boat on Lake Kivu, there will be a great boost on Lake Kivu adventure water travels.

Designed to emulate a floating boutique hotel, the Kivu Queen uBuranga from conservation-focused hotel group Mantis will have ten cabins, a swimming pool, a spa, a viewing deck with a hot tub, a restaurant and bar.

An alternative to land-based safaris, this peaceful lake cruise in the country’s Great Rift Valley will take passengers through one of the most biodiverse ecozones of the world. From the boat, open-air decks and floor-to-ceiling windows give expansive views.

The two boats offer accommodation options to leisure clients, who would wish to take relaxation after their gorilla trekking or chimpanzee trekking adventure. The boats as well provide a great connection between Gisenyi and Kibuye, instead of driving across with nights on the hotels at the shore of Lake Kivu, you can opt to float as you connect from Volcanoes National Park to Nyungwe National Park, or either way.

On the DR Congo side, Lake Kivu, provides a great connection between Rubavu and Goma, with a number of ferries sailing across both destinations, with visitors wanting to connect between Kahuzi Bienga National Park and Virunga National Park, can easily sail across, for gorilla expedition adventure.

Tchegera Island Tented Camp, sits on one of the Islands, on the Congo side of Lake Kivu, providing the best leisure based accommodation, with unique adventure activities such as kayaking, boat ride, paddling to mention but a few.
