Chimpanzee Trekking Experience in Nyungwe National Park is one of the most demanding adventure activities in Rwanda, of the 4 primate trekking experiences in Rwanda.
Being a home to other 12 primate species, Nyungwe landscape and forest has made chimpanzee trekking adventurous. You have to be in good shape to be able to manage the hilly terrain of Nyungwe forest.
There are two chimpanzee communities at Nyungwe National Park, namely, the Cyamudongo chimpanzee community and Uwinka chimpanzee community. Both communities are habituated and always welcoming visitors.
The chimpanzee trekking at Nyungwe, normally starts as early as 4:30 am, with a drive from your lodge, depending on hour far, your sleep away from the park, to either Cyamudongo or Uwinka, depending where your permit is allocated.
There is a lot of ground walk and hiking in the forest in search of the chimpanzees, so the guests are advised to be in good walking shape. However on a lucky day, the chimpanzee can as well be easily encountered.
Booking chimpanzee permit at Nyungwe National Park.
For you to be able to enjoy your Chimpanzee trekking experience in Nyungwe National Park, you must have booked your permit in advance, as there are only 18 permits sold per day, and is on a first come first serve basis.
You are only assured of trekking once your permit is booked and confirmed through paying. You can also book the sector where you want to trek, either Uwinka, or Cyamudongo.

The chimpanzee permit at Nyungwe National Park costs 150 dollars per person, excluding the park entrance fees which is 100$.
The trekkers must be of +15 years.
